The Gibbon Project

The Gibbon Project that was held on 6 March was aimed at creating awareness of the plight of the gibbons in Malaysia and to understand the impact of human activities, such as the pet market, on the gibbon population. In keeping with this, students decided to carry out fund raising activities for the rehabilitation of rescued caged gibbons into the wild by the Gibbon Protection Society Malaysia (GPSM). The GPSM is a registered NGO which carries out programs related to wildlife conservation like wildlife rescue and rehabilitation for future reintroduction program. They also assist the government in locating and intervening in illegal wildlife trade.
Some of the fund raising activities carried out were Hand Painting, Banana Eating Competition, Photo-booth with a gibbon cut-out and a Bake Sale. They also sold T-Shirts at RM 29. These efforts allowed the students to contribute RM 4000 to the GPSM. There was also a talk by an invited speaker from GPSM about their efforts to protect the dwindling gibbon population in Malaysia.
