A Trip to Ozanam Home
The first community service organized by MADU was held on 26 October 2018. A group comprising of 18 students visited Ozanam Home, a shelter located in Petaling Jaya. The objective of this visit was to provide social and professional development to children who had been abandoned or might have been living in poverty.
As soon as we arrived at Ozanam Home, we were greeted enthusiastically by the children and the supervisor of the home whom the children called “Mother”. The event started with an icebreaker during which the facilitators introduced themselves to the children. Next, we had a warm-up session by Mr. Syauqi who was an expert in zumba dancing. Both the children and facilitators participated exuberantly in this lively dance.
The children were then divided into six groups/teams and proceeded with the main event, an explore race. We set up different checkpoints for the groups and at each checkpoint, tasks were given. The children completed the race despite the pouring rain. Each child wanted their team to win, so they were attentive and cooperative. Even the youngest child participated enthusiastically. The teamwork that they displayed was impressive. After the race, we had some tasty sandwiches and drinks. As we ate with the children, we shared our experiences of travelling and of our studies.
At the end of the session, we had a small prize giving ceremony where each child was given a present as a token of appreciation and the group which collected the most points from the race won the grand prize. The children were happy with their presents and we enjoyed interacting with them. All in all it was a wonderful experience.
