Economics Guest Lecture
On 24 May, Economics students from the August 2018 and January 2019 intakes attended a lecture on ‘Government Intervention: The Good, The Bad and The Unknown’ by Mr. Muhd Iqbal Makmur, an Economics lecturer at the Taylor’s Business School as part of their curriculum. The purpose of the talk was to educate the students on the current status of price control, taxes and subsidies in the Malaysian economy. This is crucial as students will then be able to compare these with the policies and interventions implemented in Australia. With new policies being implemented in accordance with the shift of the Malaysian government, students were able to form an opinion on the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of government interventions like the shifting of the taxation system from the existing GST to SST.
At the end of this lecture students had a clearer view of how Malaysia’s economy can and should be improved. The lecture ended with a question and answer session where students were given the opportunity to interact and engage with the speaker and obtain more information.
