Gardenia Field Trip

The SACE International Economics students went on a field trip to Gardenia Bakeries Bakers Maison in Shah Alam, Selangor. The visit took place on Saturday, 27 April 2019, and involved 40 students from the August 2018 and January 2019 intakes. This trip was aimed at providing an insight into the production methods and factory layout so that the students could apply economics principles in real life situation.

The visit encompassed a variety of activities. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a hospitable tour officer, Ms. Fairy who gave us a short briefing about the agenda. The fragrant aroma of freshly baked bread filled our nostrils as we entered the factory. We were then guided into a hall to watch a corporate video on the history of Gardenia and their marvelous Research and Development (R&D) division which eventually turned them into an established brand in Malaysia.

Next was the factory tour. Ms. Fairy briefed us on the safety measures, and then we were taken to see the actual production process from an elevated walkway, starting from the dough kneading to the packing of the finished goods. This factory branch specializes only in the production of white loafs and cream rolls while the other range of breads are produced in other branches. Ms. Fairy explained the purpose of the machineries used and the production methods that typically involved capital intensive, as seen from the low number of workers. We could see that the factory followed strict hygiene procedures and efficient methods of production which helped to increase its productivity.

After the factory tour, we were served Gardenia waffles and a selection of coffee or tea by the Gardenia bakery onsite. During the question and answer session, students seized the opportunity to inquire about the economic approaches taken by the company in order to better understanding the role of factory-based operations. When we left, each student was given a goodie bag filled with breads and buns. It was indeed a great visit as we got to apply the economic principles or concepts learnt in classroom which widened our comprehension of real-life economies.
